Calendar

Calendars are used to organize your schedule, and also when working with other people to arrange meetings, schedule events (such as parties), and plan ahead.

Example

Jill’s party is in three weeks and you want to put it on your calendar so you don’t forget, and can plan for it. You create the event in Calendar, and move it into a group containing related events, such as Upcoming Events or Jill’s Party. If you already have set it up in a different calendaring software (see below), you can import the event into your Connector calendar. If you are sharing with other users, you can invite them to the event, and they can copy it to their own calendar.

How To: Use The Calender

Creating an Event

The steps to create a calendar event are covered in the Working with Items section below. There are some features specific to the Calendar application to keep in mind:

  • You can create as many separate calendars as you want. You can have one for Home and another for Work, for instance.
  • When you create an event, it will automatically be placed into the first calendar in your list. But you can also place it directly into any Calendar.

  • You can set up repeating events (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). You can even set events to repeat certain days of the week, say every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Importing Calendar

Calendar can import from any program that supports the standard iCalendar format (.ics).

  1. Go the Calendar application
  2. Click Import iCalendar
  3. Click Browse and select a file to upload
  4. Select the calendar into which you would like the events imported
  5. Choose an existing calendar from the dropdown list, or;
  6. Click the New Calendar radio button and enter a name for a new calendar in the text box
  7. Click Import

Overlaying Schedules in Calendar

When viewing your own Calendars, you can overlay the events from other users’ calendars. This is a great way to find available time slots between multiple users to schedule meetings and other events. You can compare schedules for an entire month (month view) or zoom in on a single day’s events for the specified users, hour-by-hour (in list view).

Example

You and two friends agreed to help shop for food for Jill’s party. However, you are all very busy and it’s difficult to find a time that works for all three of you. These friends are users on your Joyent ‘team.’ So you overlay their calendars on yours, and that way it’s easy to see the one time slot that works for all three of you!

How To: Overlaying Schedules in Month View

  1. In Calendar application, click the Groups tab
  2. Open (click on) the calendar onto which you want to overlay others’ events
  3. Click Overlay Users on the menu bar. This opens a drawer listing all users in your Connector
  4. Click each user whose main calendar you wish to overlay
  5. Joyent displays each overlaid users’ events in a different color, along with your events on the current calendar

How To: Overlaying Schedules in List View

  1. Follow steps above for selecting users whose schedules you want to overlay
  2. Switch to list view by clicking List View on the toolbar (you can do this before or after selecting users to overlay)
  3. For the day you want to view, click the calendar icon in the column to the right of the date.
  4. Joyent will open an hourly grid with each selected users’ events for that day listed side-by-side. This makes it very easy to compare schedules
